Century Part 1

 

This two-part class explores two vibrant musical collections of the thirteenth century, the Carmina Burana (Bavaria) and the Cantigas de Santa Maria (Spain).  We will explore the performance traditions associated with the songs in these collections, with a particular emphasis on vocal styles and the techniques of instrumental accompaniment/involvement.  This class will include a workshopping component in which we experiment with different thirteenth-century performance techniques.

Historical Cooking for Beginners

 

Whether you're new to period cooking or new to cooking, period, interpreting and preparing historic recipes is a challenge and an adventure. We will provide cooks of all experience levels with practical and theoretical tools to navigate the wilds of historic cookery. We'll also discuss recipe sources and how to understand and use historic recipes. In the hands-on portion of the class, we will taste and compare ingredients and prepare a dish or two from the recipes under discussion.

Medieval Tavern Fare - 13th century Germany

 

Where does the weary traveler go for a place to sleep and a hot meal? In this survey of the history of hospitality, we will look at the types of establishments that sold of food and drink, and talk about ways of recreating their offerings for the SCA.  In the hands-on portion of the class, we will work on preparing food for the Saturday night tavern from historical sources.

Take this opportunity to get up close and personal with Darkwood's horses.  Have you ever wanted to learn more about how to handle horses, saddle, bridle, lead and more safely around a horse?  Learn the Difference between English and Western tack and gear.  There will be limited space to even "mount up" and feel how a horse moves.  Riding helmets and boots with a heel are required for any children and recommended for adults.
