War and revel, drawn from the three Slavic Spas festivals and the Feast of the Intercession
As summer’s Honey Spas gives way to the Apple and Grain, and the year turns toward the Protection of the Intercession, so too does our populace gather to mark the harvest with steel, mead, and table.
Late summer across the medieval Eastern Slavic lands brought a trio of beloved feasts — the Medovyi Spas (Honey Feast), when the first honey was blessed and poppy-seed cakes shared; the Yablochnyi Spas (Apple Feast), when orchards were blessed; and the Orikhovyi or Khlibnyi Spas (Nut and Grain Feast), when the last sheaves were cut and bread baked from the new wheat. As autumn deepened, the populace turned to the Feast of the Intercession (Pokrova), honoring the protection cast over field, hearth, and folk as the world settled toward winter.
The Harvest Feast of the Intercession weaves these threads together: a day of contested fields, tasted sweetness, and shared bread, closing beneath the mantle of the season’s protection.
The Day’s Offerings
The Field of Sheaves — Heavy Combat War
Fighters take the field in a war themed to the harvest itself — companies contesting “sheaves,” “orchards,” and “hives” across the battlefield, with scenarios built around gathering, holding, and defending the harvest rather than simple slaughter. All heavy combatants authorized under Kingdom marshal rules are welcome; marshals in waiting are encouraged to lend their eyes to the lists.
The Honey Cup — Mead Tasting Competition
In the spirit of Medovyi Spas, brewers and vintners bring their meads — dry, sweet, melomel, metheglin, and all variations between — for populace judging. Entrants are asked to provide a brief written history or inspiration for their brew alongside tasting portions. Categories and populace’s-choice ribbons will be awarded at feast.
The Bountiful Board — Cook’s Showcase Feast
Rather than a single kitchen laboring alone, this feast invites individual cooks and households to contribute dishes for display and shared tasting — apple preserves, honeyed breads, roasted grains, autumn stews — each with documentation of period inspiration where possible. A populace’s-choice recognition will be given, in keeping with the spirit of sharing the first fruits of harvest.
